Ottis Willard Simpson: August 7, 1922 - May 23, 2005
Both of my parents served in the Army. My father enlisted in September, 1940 and served in combat in North Africa and Italy. He received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and five battle stars. He returned home in June, 1945. My mother, Martha, was in the Nurses Corps for two years from 1944-1946. She married my father December 5, 1945, and at that time, the Army frowned on having married women in the service. She left her military career but continued working as a nurse at the local hospital until she became a mother in 1950.
My uncle, Ott Simpson, joined the U.S. Army Air Corp in April, 1940. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in November, 1962. Among his many awards was the Distinguished Flying Cross. Uncle Ott flew thirty mission over Germany during World War II.
